I feel there's something not quite right about the recent results of the Virgin Media Report into UK UFO Hot-Spots. It seems as if every subsequent news report relating to their findings has involved disingenuous data and it's probably to be expected considering the careful wording of the original press release/s.
I'm referring to instances like the statement that Nick Pope, "Supports the study. Not that Nick, "Carried out the study" or, "Assisted" but that he merely "supports "the study.....
This post isn't so much about UFOs but rather about the poor reporting that is peddled to us every day, this time it just happens to be in regard to UFOs. It may seem a bit banal to highlight the obviously flawed media-machine but it just pisses me off that something as simple as the details of a report could be so badly misinterpreted by virtually ever local newspaper website that subsequently latched onto it.

Introduction
I've systematically gone through a number of subjects where skepticim topics, but conspiracy theories never interested me. But of all the conspiracy theories, I encountered 9/11 theories the most.
I watched a History channel documentary that covered a whole bunch of 9/11 theories which left me feeling like the issue was fully explained, this documentary I could not remember at all when I got into an argument with my dad about the WTC collapse, leaving me with the annoying feeling that everything my dad said had been addressed and debunked, and I'd seen these rebuttals at some point in my life, but couldn't even remember what had and hadn't been rebutted. I thought about 9/11, it was on a short list of skeptic/believer issues that I had not given proper consideration to being true, not quite as dismissed as divination or angel sightings, but not like in the "received a fair trial" camp. I did some research on 9/11 conspiracies in the days following the aforementioned conversation with my dad but knew I'd just forget what I learned in time. And forget it I did. I wished I had a document that would just have all the arguments for conspiracy and have all the counter-arguments all neatly available to reference to. I wished this document existed.
Then one day I found that lost History channel documentary, 9/11: Fact or Fiction and I got myself to make that document.
Attempt at fair trial
I decided to give the 9/11-conspiracy side a fair trial. With almost every conspiracy debunking I watched I sought the other side's response I watched a 3-part response to the history channel documentary. I read conspiracy buff's comments under debunking videos, I read the debating of certain arguments on a message board and I watched a seven-part response to Screw Loose Change, a debunking of Loose Change. I found the conspiracy supporter's side where I could. To be fair, very few of the web links in the Screw Loose Change rebuttal lead anywhere, and the little I read from 911myths.com didn't have rebuttals to their specific points (although I could imagine what they'd be when the site uses quotes from government workers as evidence.) The fair hearing portion of my research is incomplete. And is hereby suspended indefinitely.
Bitching and complaining (Skip if you don't want to waste your time)
Finishing that 7-part thing before was a drag, my tide of giving a crap about this brought on by rediscovering that History channel documentary was on its way back out to sea. The final video I watched I was tempted to post on a message board with the message "Didn't watch the whole thing, just argue about it so I can skim your argument later and take whoever's word for it." In other words the longer I pushed my "fair hearing" the less fair it would be. The whole project that is this document relied on the research having interestingness and pleasantness, as soon as that was gone my attention was stuck on very rational thoughts like "Why the heck am I wasting my time with this? Who cares what my opinion on this topic is or if I give one side a fair hearing? It's not like I'll influence the decision whether or not there's a new investigation into 9/11 or anything else important. Loads of people have an opinion on this, no one's going to give a crap that I have my own or that I researched it. You know I'm not going to radically change my paradigm on 9/11 to that of government conspiracy unless I find damning scientific or legal evidence for it, and we'd all have heard of that by now if it was available, so this whole "fair hearing" thing is an empty gesture because the theorists don't have a fair chance at convincing me." I'd made my list of arguments and rebuttals. The fair hearing portion was just out of some personal, idealistic notion of evaluating both sides of everything I looked into and being intellectually fair. But the fair hearing must end now. For now.

Over a century later, airplane passengers claim to have photographed dragons over Tibet.
But only recently learned that there are ties between the hunt for pterodactyls and creationism. Though it shouldn't have surprised me since I've seen creationists invoke the Loch Ness Monster and other sea serpents, and the Creation Museum is chock full of dinosaurs.
And lets not forget that in the early days of flying saucers, sky animals were suggested as a possible explanation. As were intelligent bees from Mars.

A UFO story/hoax that fascinated me then and still....
David Richie, in hisUFO book [op. cit] writes that "In 1954, only a few months after American 'contactee' George Adamski claimed to have met an extraterrestrial in the southwestern desert of the United States, one 'Cedric Allingham' published a book titled Flying Saucer from Mars, his [Allingham's] encounter in Britain with aliens from Mars." [Page 7 ff.]

Patrick Moore, as Wikipedia recounts, never admitted to the hoax and even threatened lawsuits against anyone who suggested such a thing.
Sir Patrick Moore went to his grave, not disclosing whether he created the Mars book and story nor his part in the alleged confabulation.
Now I'm flummoxed.
What was the point of all the creative hoaxing if one doesn't fulfill the premise for the hoax?
(That's my problem with colleague Anthony Bragalia's Socorro hoax theory. No one has really come forward to admit the hoax and its purpose. Mr. Bragalia says it was local college students getting back at Officer Zamora who, supposedly harassed them.)
In the Allingham incident, did Moore tweak his fellow Brits, showing them to be gullible or ignorant when it came to flying saucer tales?
No, he didn't, not in any overt way.
The Mars book, photos, and "encounter" languished and today is an interesting (to me and Christopher Allan aka CDA) UFO footnote or nostalgic throwback to a time when, in our youth, we thought (at least I did) that Adamski and Allingham actually had the experiences they told us they had.
Patrick Moore became renown for his astronomical oeuvre, especially about the Moon.
So one can see his hesitancy to come clean if he had produced the Allingham Mars story as time went on.
But the initial thrust took place before he was exceptionally well-known and a respected member of British society. He was a kind of renegade in the early 50s and even afterwards.
He lied about his age to get into the RAF during World War II.
And he wrote fiction (as you read in the Wikipedia piece).
And "he once joined the Flat Earth Society as an ironic joke"," Wikipedia tells us.
But why the Mars hoax, based, derivatively on Adamski's confabulation?

I don't see anywhere that Patrick Moore married. Also he had an inordinate closeness to his mother. (Freud would have much to say about that.)
But still, why an identification with Adamski? It surely wasn't a distant homoerotic attraction.

Adamski beat him to the punch. All Moore could do was emulate Adamski, by making up his (Moore's) own flying saucer tale, a visit from Mars.
It wasn't unique certainly, but it did work, for a while.
Moore/Allingham had, like Adamski, an imagined transcendent experience.
It was a psychosis of association, or creative folie `a deux.
This is what the Pascagoula boys (Hickson and Parker) experienced. And the Hills.
Moore, like me (and maybe CDA) was so caught up in the 50's flying saucer mania that he had to be part of it. (I started a Flying Saucer Club in high school. I'd be interested in what -- the now -- "uber-skeptic CDA did at the time, if anything.)
Anyway, that's my take on this almost obscure flying saucer moment.
