McEwen discussed some intriguing observations by HiRise, which suggest that briny water may flow down steep Martian slopes during the local spring and summer. Sixteen such sites have been identified to date, mostly on the slopes of the huge Valles Marineris canyon complex, McEwen said. Marcy uses advanced telescopes to detect concentrated signals in space. He believes these signals may indicate the existence of another advanced civilization, because nothing in the universe is known to emit such signals. The Templeton Foundation recently granted him 200,000 for his proposal.
Marcy leads a team that specializes in searching for laser light for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, program at UC Berkeley, a program that uses advanced telescopes to detect strong signals in an attempt to find technological civilizations in the universe.
His work is only a section of the collective effort of the organization. UC Berkeley has established a reputation as the world's largest organization - since NASA's 1993 SETI program - for exploring advanced life in the universe.
As more and more Earthlike planets are being discovered, some scientists feel that there is no longer anything "particularly special about Earth" that makes it uniquely conducive to life, according to Andrew Siemion, a project scientist in the UC Berkeley SETI group.
Every year, the program gathers approximately 1 million in funding, which is spread over 10 unique projects, according to Dan Werthimer, director of the UC Berkeley group. Distinct categories each concern a certain range of the electromagnetic wave spectrum, because the researchers cannot be sure at which wavelength other civilizations may be emitting their signals.

"You have to know we are not searching for crop circles or flying saucers," Marcy said with a smile.
So far, the only achievements of SETI at Berkeley are advancements in technology, as researchers have yet to find direct clues of other advanced civilizations. Nevertheless, Marcy says that these advancements are benefiting astronomy and science in general.
"I am not an optimist," Marcy said, describing the likelihood of finding intelligent extraterrestrial life. "I would bet on my house that we would fail... But this is such an important question, the question of 'Are we alone?', and the only way to find out is to risk it." - THE DAILY CALIFORNIAN.

What is the real purpose of SETI?
Has SETI found any signs of intelligent life somewhere out there in outer space? Or is this outfit misguided? Is it on a wild goose chase? Is it barking up the wrong tree? If so, is it being used covertly by some other faction, and for a different agenda?
SETI, which is an outdated, low-tech program whose mission is to Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence, seems to be clueless, or in denial of where these ETs actually are.
SETI has been vainly endeavoring to listen for and find radio transmissions from outer space indicating intelligent life countless light years away, but it seems likely that no intelligent beings are sending us such transmissions, at least not that we could detect with our barbaric technology. If extraterrestrials are sending us messages, it's more likely via some sophisticated technology that's way over our heads. It seems that SETI's problem is that it's looking in the wrong place - or places. The SETI scientists and supporters deny the strong possibility that aliens are closer to the Earth then they want to admit. Either the SETI team is ignorant of the presence of extraterrestrials near or on the Earth, or it's a front that is hiding that facts from us. It's even possible that SETI has been taken out of the loop of actual top-secret intelligence regarding UFOs and an alien presence near the Earth. I'm talking about the military and US government's loop.
An authority on the matter, Stanton Friedman says, "I am convinced that there is indeed overwhelming evidence that aliens have been visiting Earth, or being tracked by military radar systems, are abducting earthlings, and are being observed by pilots and others all across the Earth." Hence, extraterrestrials are making a definite presence here on Earth, leaving SETI in the dark. But the government has been endeavoring to cleverly covering it all up. Not too successfully, actually. Too many people know the truth.
For those of you who have seen the movie Arrival, doesn't it indicate that SETI was looking in the wrong direction? Experts were listening "out there," while the real aliens were "down here" all along.
Although many consider SETI a fringe program, it's closer to the mainstream than other ET-seeking programs, with its diligent alien signal-listening agenda, since it comes off as more easily believable than the idea that actual aliens could be right here in our midst. It's too bad that the UFO debunkers are squashing out people who have had actual UFO sightings, alien abductions, alien implants, etc. Apparently the SETI team is amidst these stubborn debunkers who have prevented journalists and eyewitnesses from getting the real facts across to the public. Unfortunately, the lame stories of UFOs and ETs that are found in the tabloids, or science-fiction books and movies, suggest that the whole phenomenon seems too ridiculous to be believed. And that's exactly how the US government prefers it as part of their clever cover-up scheme. Isn't it pretty obvious that SETI is an intrinsic part of these government UFO cover-up conspiracies? Most likely this is the real reason SETI was created, or allowed to exist; not to actually ever listen to alien transmissions, but to hide the real facts that an alien presences is already here.
Friedman says it nicely: "SETI is an exercise in futility foisted off by the charismatic scientists on the press and some of the scientific community. I am sure the intelligence agency personnel in the know about alien visitations think SETI is a great system for misdirecting the attention of everyday people and the media interested in space and visitors from it."
So is SETI being used as a front for the government's secret agenda and cover-ups?

I know that many research oriented conferences have touched on the issue. The ideas brought forth in these conferences are probably insightful and yet without any organization. I may be off target a bit, but I have to praise one of the most moving extraterrestrial science fiction movies ever made, 1952's "Red Planet Mars". I'd seen it on television back in the late 1960s and now that I'm watching it in a new state of mind I've got to admit as a student of UFOlogy it's not only socially powerful but it's hysterically funny in it's foresight and introspection. It's a movie that takes place at the beginning of the Cold War. When the United States and then Soviet Union were rapidly building up their arsenals to blow up the Earth to save it from one another's ideologies. Typical human behavior to say the least. The story wraps around the discovery of a young scientist and his wife who use a communications device to contact Martians. They detect the Martians via series of telescopic images showing signs of industry going on. They struggle to get a message back from the Martians but to no avail until the scientist's son suggests the mathematical equation for Pi be used. That does the trick and soon the Martians and humans are chatting up a storm. That may sound like a good thing but as any UFOlogist worth their salt who has read the declassified CIA sponsored Robertson Panel document, you can tell what happens next. That document exposed the drive that some in government planned to squash any UFO information, spy on UFO groups and discredit witnesses. The Martians tell about how they've solved the challenges of longevity and energy and peaceful relations. I'll leave the story there as there is an even bigger plot twist to come and I want you all to enjoy the flick. The importance of this movie is that it addresses concepts that information about the US and foreign government's reluctance to release UFO/ET data. It really explains it much. The direction is fine, the performances are of surprisingly high quality with Peter Graves as the heroic scientist, Andrea King as his scientist wife who delivers a performance that may knock you out.
