"I think the majority of people in MUFON would prefer to be seen as serious-minded investigators," assistant director Bill McNeff said. "There are a few strong-minded and independent souls who don't give a hoot what people think of them. But most of us would like to be seen as people doing a scientific investigation."
Added abduction researcher Craig R. Lang, "I say if you're skeptical of (reports of close encounters), you should be. I'm skeptical of anyone who has all the answers."

"Definitely, there are more people who are willing to report UFO sightings to us and not ask for anonymity," said McNeff, a retired electrical engineer who was 14 when reports about a strange crash near Roswell, N.M., first fueled his interest. "For years, people who reported UFOs tended to be ridiculed. That continues, but it's less and less so."

While Lee will be talking art history Saturday, Dean DeHarpporte will be delving into paranormal connections to UFOs.
"It's hard to separate them after a certain amount of time," said DeHarpporte, who as a retired meteorologist will never mistake a weather balloon for a UFO. "There is some evidence that UFOs may be in a different realm, an alternative reality, whatever you want to call it, and able to manifest in our dimension when they want to.
"I'm the first to admit that it gets murky... but we're just starting to be able to understand the human consciousness."

I opened up the conversation by asking him how he had come to investigate the Browning's (Cressy witnesses) report? Gordon told me that he was, at that time, the senior RAAF officer in Tasmania. As such he was in charge of the RAAF's University Training Squadron (Air Training Corp.) He said that he received a request from the Minister of Air to investigate a UFO sighting at Cressy. He was stationed in Hobart, so he went to the local Aero club and hired an aircraft, flew it to Launcston, where he landed the aircraft in a paddock near to the Browning's residence.
Gordon said that he "Was struck by the ordinariness of these two people" referring to the Brownings. He was impressed by the fact that the observation "Was not a fleeting observation." I asked Gordon whether or not at that time in 1960, he had any interest in the topic of "flying saucers?" He said he did not. Gordon completed his official report on the case and sent it off to higher authority.
OTHER CASES HE INVESTIGATED:
Later, while examining the RAAF's UFO files series A703, control symbol 580/1/1, I came across another case (580/1/1 part 3 p43.) which Gordon had investigated. Electricity Commission workers at Yass, sighted a silver coloured object in the sky on 22 Aug 1962. The object was said to have been in the same position all day. Fairbairn RAAF base was asked to send up an aircraft to take a look. On 23 Aug 1962 Fairbairn advised "...no solid object seen." On the 23 Aug 1962 a witness contacted the RAAF to say that the object was again visible, at 1345hrs at bearing 060 degrees and 15 degrees to the vertical, in cloudless skies.
Squadron Leaders Waller and McAltec were sent to investigate. Gordon said the object was "...silver on side facing Sun, dark on other." A theodolite showed it was "...moving from NE to SW at 20 deg in 2 or 3 hrs." The Mt Stromlo observatory, when consulted, suggested Venus. "Case closed" notes the RAAF file.
At another time, I found a third case which Gordon had looked into. On NAA file series A703 control symbol 580/1/1 party 2, pages12-13 are a memo from Gordon to the Department of Air dated 3 Dec 1960. The case is dated 18 Oct 1960 from a Mrs D A Webster and her daughter Miss S Webster of Delmont, Tasmania. They reported seeing a moving object which then hovered, at 1630hrs. It was cigar shaped with a round nose and a sloping tail. Gordon's report draws attention to a number of similarities between this sighting and the Cressy event. A hand written note on the file states that a TAA VIscount VH-TVG was in approximately the position of the sighting at the time.

Also, from the same folder, he produced some of his own old papers relating to an aircraft propulsion system which he had designed. I noted this at the time, but thought little of it at that point.

Last year while browsing the NAA RecordSearch, I came across a file which mentioned Gordon's name, which intrigued me. File series MP1469/1 control symbol R13/2/29 was titled "Request by Department of Air for Aeronautical Research Laboratories to undertake a feasibility study on a new aircraft design invented by Squadron Leader G L Waller." I decided to ask for the file to be examined and released to me. Several months later, I was able to read a digitised copy. It turned out to contain papers relating to the material which Gordon showed me in 2010.
The file is 29 pages in length and highlights include:
Page 27 is a memo from the Department of Air, Canberra dated 22 Mar 1966 to the Department of Supply. It refers an aircraft design by Gordon and seeks the advice of the Aeronautical Research Laboratories (ARL) (click here) on Gordon's design. "In very broad terms the aircraft as described as consisting essentially of a body, which could be circular in shape..."
Pge 24 of the file shows that the Acting Deputy Chief Scientist referred the matter to the ARL, Fisherman's Bend, Melbourne, Victoria, on 1 Apr 1966. To set this date in a UFO context, the Westall High School, Melbourne event (click here) happened five days later.
Page 21 is a letter from Gordon, dated 5 Apr 1966 to a Dr W A S Butement, Chief Scientist, Department of Supply, and included the line "Your and Mr Wills interest in my VTOL aircraft concept..." Included at page 19 is a cross sectional drawing of the proposed design, clearly showing it was indeed a circular air body.
Gordon submitted a patent application on the design and pages 7 to 19 of the file are a copy of this application, for an "Aircraft with Annular Aerofoil" dated 4 Feb 1966.
At page 3 is the ARL report which included the comment "The data provided by S L Waller is too inadequate to attempt a precise feasibility study...At this stage it is only possible to say, in view of the foregoing remarks, that there does not seem to be any obvious aerodynamic advantage in the proposal over systems obtaining lift by directional axial acceleration of a vertical jet..." Finally, page 1 is a memo from the ARL dated 23 May 1966 to the Department of Air - effectively no further action to be taken.
BACK TO MY INTERVIEW:
At the conclusion of my interview with Gordon, and while still talking about his aircraft deign proposal, Gordon mentioned that he had sent off a copy of his material to a Professor "Muller" (my spelling) in the USA.
ENTER JACQUES VALLEE:
At around this time I was reading Jacques Vallee's book "Forbidden Science - Volume 2:, published by Documentica Research, LLC. 2008. ISBN 978-0-615-24974-2. Surprisingly, I came across the name of one Paul Moller. Vallee's entry on page 294 of his book was dated 26 Apr 1975. The entry reads:
"I spent the afternoon with Paul Moller, a professor of aeronautical engineering at U.C. Davis who's built a saucer-shaped vehicle that flies a few feet off the ground, using a series of propellers powered by snowmobile engines. He is a young fellow in blue jeans interested in UFOs. Moller's research contradicts Claude Poher's statements about the aerodynamic properties of a disk. Poher concluded that discs were aerodynamically poor. "That's only true as a gross generalization" Moller told me. "The situation changes if you take into account the properties of the interface between the object and the air."
It certainly appeared to me that this Moller was Gordon's "Muller." A recent check on the Internet revealed that Paul Moller is an engineer who has spent the last forty years developing the personal VTOL vehicle (click here.)
IN CONCLUSION:
After reading the NAA file on Gordon's new aircraft design, the first thought that came to my mind was, that Gordon's proposal was suggesting a circular or disc shaped aircraft. I then wondered if he got the idea from his examination of UFO reports?
I have in the past written about the amazing book "UFOs and Government," an amazing history of the government's involvement with the UFO phenomenon. It's been a tremendous help to me as I research my book about Dr. J. Allen Hynek, and this past week I got the chance to meet one of the contributing authors, Richard Thieme.
Richard was giving talk on the new book at a local library the other night, and he and his wife were kind enough to meet me for a quick bite to eat before heading to the library. We had a great talk about our mutual interests, and I quickly realized what an interesting guy he is.
First of all, because the book, "UFOs and Government" is so dry and factual, I expected Richard to be a pretty dry, no-nonsense guy. But I was wrong. He's serious about UFO research, but he's also very funny and frank and even playful when he talks about UFOs, which I liked very much.
And he's an author. He writes science fiction and a whole lot more, and you can find it all at his website, www.thiemeworks.com
Then there's the amazing story of his career trajectory: Episcopal priest... writer/lecturer on the effects of technology on spirituality and society... consultant on cybersecurity issues to the CIA and NSA... UFO historian. Makes sense, right? I didn't think so, either, but somehow, with Richard, it works.

After we ate and talked, I followed him and his wife over to the library for the talk. The librarians were ecstatic; Richard brought in the biggest crowd they had ever had for one of their evenings talks. It must have been close to 100 people, which was impressive--turns out that even in an affluent suburban area there are a lot of people interested in UFOs. And Richard had them all in the palm of his hand.
It was a great talk, and he covered a wide variety of topics, although the main thrust of his presentation was about the book, how it came about and why he thinks it's an important read for anyone interested in UFOs (which it is).
My favorite story of the night had nothing to do with the book, however. When he gave his bio, he talked about how he was interested in UFOs all his life, but didn't become serious about studying them until he was a priest. This came about when he was assigned to his first congregation, in a small town in Utah just outside of a large U.S. Air Force base. A member of the congregation who worked closely with Richard in running the church was a retired Air Force officer who had served at the local base for many years. One time in 1977 Richard was talking to this guy about the new movie they had both recently seen, called "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and Richard made a comment that it was crazy to think that there are unidentified things flying around in our airspace and the Air Force can't catch them... His friend grew very serious and said, "Oh, these things "are "flying around up there... And we "can't" catch them."
And "that's" how a priest becomes a UFO hunter.

So long, I was bike riding in Santa Barbara. When the bike footsteps turned North to join in matrimony later a important rode, I stopped up for a water break. As for me, I consideration it was very cool; been looking out for them, to be dull. Out of 30 get-up-and-go as an electro-mechanical technician, 15 were in aerospace quota to form satellites. I enlighten all about spacecraft. I too enlighten all about aircraft. I enlighten what every can and cannot do. This was it seems that a craft moving in a way spacecraft and aircraft cannot. It was function it's own thing; reckless of "our" physics and lime boundaries.

PREFACE: UFOS OVER WATER
It has always been know that UFOs seem to have an attraction for certain things, like electricity and nuclear power. There are also a number of very compelling cases that show that UFOs have a use for water.
It has been theorized by some researchers that UFOs have bases under our oceans and lakes. Eyewitness accounts of unknown flying objects going into and coming from below these waters have made an extremely sound case for this theory. UFOs have been seen sucking up water from lakes and oceans, but exactly what the water is used for is a mystery.
UFOs that enter and exit bodies of water are often referred to as Unidentified Submersible Objects. Be sure to see the case of the Costa Rica Photograph in 1971, and the Shag Harbor Crash.
UFO VISITS NEW JERSEY WATERS
Another case that I recently did some research on occurred in January of 1966, when the Wanaque Reservoir in New Jersey was visited by UFOs on a cold, winter's day. The first reports came on January 11 in the small borough of Wanaque. As recently as 2010 the borough's population was listed as just over 11,000.
The normal routine of Wanaque would be broken when an extraordinary event would change the lives of some its inhabitants. It all started at about 6:30 PM, when Wanaque Patrolman Joseph Cisco, on routine patrol received a call from Pompton Lakes dispatcher of a "glowing light, possibly a fire." The next thing he heard startled him:
"People in Oakland, Ringwood, Paterson, Totowa, and Butler claim there's a flying saucer over the Wanaque."
PATROLMAN INVESTIGATES
Cisco pulled off the road and saw a light much larger than any of the stars out that night. It was about the size of a softball from his viewpoint. The light pulsated white, then changed to red. The object seemed to hover in the night sky, and made no sound. Cisco continued to watch the object, attempting to understand what exactly he was seeing.
At the same time, the borough's Mayor Harry T. Wolfe, along with Councilmen Warren Hagstrom and Arthur Barton, and the Mayor's 14-year-old son, Billy, were heading to the annual Christmas tree burn, when they overheard the dispatcher's radio call to Patrolman Cisco.
Very interested in the report, they drove to a point near the Raymond Dam to meet Cisco, and investigate what this object may have been. Billy saw the object first. He saw it as it flew low to the frozen ice of the lake. It looked like a huge star at first glance. The entire group saw the object emit various colors as it went.
NUMEROUS CALLS FROM CITIZENS
Soon, numerous calls began to come in to the Police station. Cisco sent a radio call to Officer George Dykman, who was in the vicinity. Soon, Dykman was approached by two witnesses who pointed out the UFO to him. Other citizens were arriving at the location, gaping at the object.
Suddenly, Cisco heard another message: "Something's burning a hole in the ice! Something with a bright light on it, going up and down!"
Then another call: "Oh boy! Something just landed in front of the dam!"
MULTIPLE EYEWITNESSES
Another eyewitness was Fred Steimes, an employee of the reservoir. He and another witness claimed that they saw a bolt of light, like a beam, shoot down to the water. By this time, Cisco, Mayor Wolfe, Town Councilmen Hagstrom and Barton had made their way to the top of the dam to get a better vantage point.
Hagstrom would later make this statement: "There was something up there that was awful bright." We don't know what it was. We thought it was a helicopter, but we didn't hear a motor. It looked like a helicopter with big landing lights on. We got goose bumps all over when we saw where the hole was."
The sightings continued the next day, when Patrolman Jack Wardlaw reported a "bright white disk" hovering near his home, which was located just west of the Wanaque Reservoir. Wardlaw described the object as "definitely disc-shaped and at certain angles, egg-shaped."
There was never a definitive answer as to what the witnesses saw over the waters of Wanaque. Why did the UFO make a hole in the ice? Obviously for some reason they were after the water. But, why?

So far my posts dealt essentially with conceptual and theoretical issues. This time I would like to propose an empirical case study that integrates some of the concepts discussed previously.
THE WAVE
The 1896-1897 wave seems to be one of the first reported waves of unidentified flying object. It occurred mostly in Western United States with a few sightings in Western Canada. It is a good case for establishing a wave because in those days there were no planes, or ongoing unverified sightings of UFOs. In essence, the sky was clean. As well, the key element to have a wave was also present: the possibility of sharing on broad basis information about sightings. Otherwise, disparate sightings could not have been construed as being part of a wider phenomenon. By the end of the 19th century, the telegraphic news network was global, with underwater transoceanic cable linking all continents. There was already international news agency distributing information worldwide through the telegraphic network, and lastly the fruits of mandatory elementary education in Western countries could be seen with relatively high literacy rates never seen before. Hence, the objective conditions to have a social object are met.
The first reported sighting was on 17 November 1896 in Sacramento, capital of California. Sacramento and San Francisco newspaper report the news the following day. It is interesting to note that the witnesses talked about moving lights in the night sky. Some of them mentioned seeing an elongated light. This links directly with the post on the materiality of UFOs.
The word "Airship" appears because one of the witnesses claims to have seen helixes in the back, and two men pedaling under the airship. On 22 and 25 November, other sightings of strange lights in sky are reported throughout California. Yet, as of 18 November the word Airship is used by newspapers and is quickly adopted. This phenomenon is very similar to what happened in 1947 when Kenneth Arnold talked about objects wobbling like a "flying saucer." This links to my discussion about the mixture between subjective and objective elements as an integral part of the UFO phenomenon.
By the end of November, various stories very similar to contemporary UFO sightings start to emerge in the press. A Colonel Shaw said that he met non-human entities (close encounter of the 3rd kind). A man called Indio said that he stepped into a machine (trips in flying saucers). Other stories are about an inventor that will make a statement about his airship in the near future (misleading information). One statement particularly interesting was from the former Attorney-General for California, William Hart, who claimed to be in contact with the inventor, and that he will use it to bomb Havana and liberate Cuba (a Spanish colony then) (a contactee story?). Lastly, one can mention the story reported by the Dallas Morning News on 19 April 1897, stating that the body of a Martian was found and the corps was interred in a Freemason cemetery (UFO crash and ensuing cover-up by a conspiratorial organization!).
As one can see, some very familiar themes emerged during the wave. How much of these sightings can be attributed to genuine psi effect is hard to tell. However, a mixture of hoaxes and genuine psi effects is actually a common feature noted by parapsychologists when studying mediums. It is even possible to think that strange and out-of-character motivations for hoaxing could be an integral part of a psi effect, as it reinforces the belief in the strange phenomenon, which in turn increases the likelyhood of creating further psi effects. A symbiotic relationship between psi and hoaxes cannot be overlooked here.
Some have already looked into some psycho-social effects to explain the propagation of airship story and expanding hoax fashion that occurred after November 1896. As well, it is important to underline that ethics in journalism was not a big priority in those days, and that journalists were certainly important actors in expanding the "size" of the wave. Lastly, some authors proposed that "tubes" were seen in the sky, like Busby, Michael. (2004). "Solving the 1897 Airship Mystery". Pelican Publishing.
ANALYSIS
If the wave was a physical expression of a social psi effect, then one look for a social symbolic meaning; what society's collective unconscious was trying to express? Two leads could be followed here:
1- Time: what was happening at that time?
2- Geography: was there something particular about California at that time?
The timing of the wave is particularly interesting from a political standpoint. The November 1996 to April 1897 was actually the transition period for the new president-elect, McKinley, to get his affairs in order between the election in the 2nd week of November and the sworn in. (It is to be noted that the transition period was eventually moved to January later in the 20th century).
The issue of the day was a potential war against Spain. McKinley was personally against the war, as well as the religious voters who supported him. But the tension was mounting, as William Hart's statement can attest. The famous journalist Joseph Pulitzer (from whom the famous literary award's name is coming from), and William Hearst (inventor of Yellow journalism), among others, led an active campaign since 1895 to launch a military attack against Spain to liberate its colonies. The incident of the USS Maine, which blow-up, became the pretext for an American invasion of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The rapid American conquest had a significant symbolic impact. The US was now really playing the great powers' game. A major collective identity change happened. As noted in a previous post, shifting identity seems to play an important role in poltergeists. Hence, it appears that the time is socially significant.
The geographical dimension seems more subtle here. William Hearst, an important actor in the period that leads to the American-Spanish War, owned several newspapers, including one in California, the San Francisco Examiner. Interestingly, when the wave started, the San Francisco Examiner was one of the most sceptical about the wave. It is difficult to assess how much personal impact he had on the editorial line of the Examiner, but this in line with poltergeist phenomena where the conscious mind rejects the physical message produced by the unconscious mind. Self-denial is an important part of poltergeists.
Another criteria emerging from geography is the issue of who might be the central person. Where Californians more unconsciously worried about a potential war with Spain? This is very difficult to assess. However, it is interesting to note that Hearst had a life-long interest in airships. He personally ensured that his newspaper covered the Arctic trip of the airship Italia in 1928 (which ended in a tragedy). He also provided funding for the Graf Zepplin world tour in 1929. Without finding a "social" central person, it is at least possible to find one individual who had a number of attributes of a central person, key to understand poltergeists.
Could a single individual be behind a UFO wave? Or could it be that a single individual can give the tone to social psi events? These questions cannot be answered at this time, but it opens new perspectives on our understanding of the collective unconscious.
