As some of you may know, over the last few weeks I have made a couple of posts (at my "UFO MYSTIC" blog) on Jason Offutt's new book: "DARKNESS WALKS - THE SHADOW PEOPLE AMONG US". But, now, having finally digested its contents, it's time for a review. And, fortunately, "DARKNESS WALKS" is a bloody good one!
I mentioned in one of my earlier posts at "UFO MYSTIC" that - for this reader and reviewer, at least - there are definite parallels between the ominous Shadow People of Jason's book and some of the stranger, occult/paranormal-driven Men in Black-type reports highlighted by the likes of Keel, Bender and Barker.
And, although Jason's book is obviously not a definitive guide to the MIB, it is most definitely required-reading for anyone and everyone interested in the subject - hence why I am reviewing it right here.
So, with that said, let's get right to the book.
With a foreword from best-selling and long-time paranormal author, Brad Steiger, "DARKNESS WALKS" is a heady, ominous and roller-coaster ride into the twilight world of some of the strangest and most unsettling creatures to ever grace our planet.
They lurk in the shadows. We see fleeting glimpses of them out of the corners of our eyes. And they are a decidedly ominous, humorless, and grim bunch, to say the very least.
Sometimes, when I'm reading books like this, I get disappointed by the fact that the author spends most of his or her time relating case after case, but not actually attempting to define what might be found at the heart of the puzzle - or even what might be the root-cause of it all. Fortunately, this is not the case with "DARKNESS WALKS".
Yes, Jason most assuredly does relate numerous reports of encounters with the Shadow People; however, he also addresses the many and varied theories that have been presented to try and determine who they are and what they may want with us.
Citing reports that date back to the 1800s, Jason relates a copious amount of witness testimony concerning Shadow People encounters - much of which is pretty unsettling. Ominous presences in the bedroom, terrifying sleep-paralysis-type experiences, hooded entities provoking fear, havoc and mayhem, and even descents into madness following encounters with the Shadow People proliferate within the pages of the book.
Fortunately, Jason is not afraid to address all of the theories that may explain the presence of the Shadow People - which range from chemical-imbalances in the brain to demons, and from ET to Islamic Jinns.
Then there are the red-eyed entities (red-eyed beings are, of course, a staple part of Ufology, Cryptozoology, and Forteana in general); the disturbing "Hat Man," who is surely a close cousin of the MIB of the 1950s; hooded monstrosities; choking-characters; and even blazing-eyed Shadow-Cats.
So what's going on with the Shadow People? Who are they? And what the hell do they want with us?
Jason answers such questions by looking into the worlds of physics, psychiatry, metaphysics, western religion, and native American shamanism - and he does so in a very capable, thought-provoking and informative fashion.
Jason also comments on the work and theories of my good friend and Fortean hotty Marie Jones (author of "PSIENCE", among countless other titles), the ways and means to rid yourself of the Shadow People, as well as ways to invite or invoke them - if you dare.
All in all, this is a great, informative, detailed and highly thought-provoking study of a phenomenon that straddles the realms of the paranormal, the occult and ufology with uncanny ease - if they're not all a part of some wider phenomenon; which I most strongly suspect they actually are.
Jason has done us all a great favor by writing this book, and Dennis Stacy and Patrick Huyghe of Anomalist Books are to be applauded for publishing it.
Now, all you have to do is go out and buy "DARKNESS WALKS" - TODAY, OK?!

Crop circles have started appearing in the UK this year. In April, there were a couple simple designs in the early crops, followed by a beautiful May group which included this star (above).
These overlapping arcs, or swallows, appeared on May 22nd (right) at Wexcombe Down, Wiltshire. Just two days later, on May 24th, this design on concentric circles was found at Winterbourne Monkton, Wiltshire (below right). Lucy Pringle photographed just three circles in May but June is already very promising as the peak season approaches.
On June 14th, residents of Everleigh, Wiltshire were treated to a beautiful bisected circle with quadrilateral segments (below).

I had some time to work on my own stuff Wednesday as I was waiting for a customer to get back with me about quilting options on the quilt I have on my machine. I had the whole day to work on my projects! Yay! That doesn't happen often.so what did I get done?
These are all pictures of my finished green 9-patch UFO "(the first for the month and #28 on my UFO list here)". The little quilt has a classic, timeless feel from the 9-patches, so I quilted it with very traditional hanging diamonds. The binding was finished up while watching movies with the kids. I am really enjoying it and it looks nice in the bathroom!

I am so excited about this one, if I hadn't already had a quilt on the machine it would be on there and finished up. I ordered the minkee backing on-line after I knew exactly how big the top would be and it is here already. I do need to piece the back before I can quilt it. I will use black to bind the quilt and it is cut and ready to put together. I probably should have used a small black border before the pieced outer border, but I think this will look fine with the black to finish it off.
Spring Stars (# 7 on my UFO list), one of my January UFOs, is bound and washed so is totally finished.
I really like the puckered up look this batting gives when the quilt is washed. This is a bamboo batting and is SO soft! I think I am going to love it for bed quilts. This may be what I put in Mini-me's quilt as it light weight to counter the heaviness of the minkee backing. Plus it will give me a very good idea of how the bamboo stands up to repeated washing and abuse.
I have worked on one other UFO also. This is my Jelly Roll String quilt, UFO #22 on my list. I ordered some bargain fabric on-line a few years ago and this jelly roll was part of it. The colors looked really pretty on my monitor, but when I got them here I wasn't in love with them at all. I gave a string workshop for my local guild back in February and used these as one of the examples. You can read about that here. Since February they have sat around in one of my project drawers until this week. I got the top totally put together with borders. There were only 23 blocks from the jelly roll, but I took the pieces and was able to make three other blocks, two of which are on the front in opposing corners.
This is the back. This also has the third leftover blockI didn't want any part of the UFO hanging around after it was finished. I will load it on the machine with the right-hand edge of fabric at the top. That will insure all the block shows and I don't accidentally cut any of it off.
See the horizontal line running across the fabric from the block? I bought quite a bit of yardage of this fabric from an outlet and it came off the bolt that way - which is probably why it was in the outlet store in the first place. I didn't really care because it has cutting horse weather vanes on it.
I still have to make up the binding for this one, but other than that it is ready to put on the machine when I have a few extra minutes between customer quilts.
Not too bad for a day's work!
A paradox was revealed during a recent poll of the Russians. In spite of the fact that approximately 70 percent of the country's population call themselves believers, only 26 percent believe that life after death is possible. The beliefs of the Russians are generally contradictory: Russians bring Easter cakes to church to "make them holy" but at the same time are afraid of black cats and broken mirrors.
"Public opinion" fund decided to poll the Russians on the possibility of resurrection after death. The fund found out that despite the fact that 59 percent of the citizens consider themselves Orthodox, and ten percent say that they belong to other denominations, only 26 percent believe in an afterlife.
For 54 percent resurrection is no more than a myth. The majority of those who do not believe in the afterlife are represented by rural residents, men, students and seniors.
Another interesting fact is those who do believe in the afterlife are people with an income of over 30,000 rubles a month, entrepreneurs and executives. Surprisingly, there were more of those who believed in eternal life among the businessmen than among those who call themselves Orthodox Christians: 43 percent versus 31.
According to the numerous surveys and studies, human faith is generally a collection of paradoxes and even absurdities. Russians who call themselves Orthodox Christians consider it their duty to wear a cross, but at the same time do not shy away from horoscopes and psychics' services. A growing number of advertisement promising "to return the beloved one" and "ward off a competitor" indicate a growing demand.
Generally in the recent years Russians have become much more skeptical. Horoscopes, prophetic dreams and professional astrologers are still popular among the population, but to a much lesser extent. Alien life for the majority of the Russians is as much a fairy tale as the life after death. Possibility of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations is denied by 58 percent of Russians.
However, the skepticism of the Russian people does not apply to every day superstitions. Little green creatures and life after death seem to be a myth to many, while troubles promised by a meeting with a black cat, a broken mirror or spilt salt are quite real for the most. The Russians believe that spitting over the left shoulder and knocking on wood is much more effective than a prayer or a call to the spirits.
It is worth mentioning that the representatives of the Church are not surprised by such data. Priests say that identifying themselves as Orthodox, people are not talking about religion, but, rather, the national and family tradition and culture. This means that many Russians do not believe in God, but call themselves Orthodox.
In fact, for many Russians a visit to a church during holidays or baptizing children is the same thing as knocking on wood or avoiding "jinxing," i.e., and old tradition designed to ward off trouble.
However, Russians are not the only ones that have such a strange attitude to religion. For example, 43 percent of Americans attend religious ceremonies every week, but this does not prevent 38 percent of the U.S. adults from believing in the existence of aliens, 33 percent believing in Bigfoot, and 37 percent - in ghosts. Of these, 23 percent are convinced that ghosts are their dead relatives or friends, while 20 percent said they personally met with the spirits of the dead.
Experts, however, argue that there is no paradox here. "Traditional" (in moderation) religion does not interfere with the belief in the paranormal, but quite the contrary: being open to the faith into the unknown, people are not so steadfast in their religious beliefs that reject the mysterious events in principle.
In other words, people who admit the existence of things unexplained from the viewpoint of science can be (or call themselves) Christians (Muslims, Jews), and with the same sincerity believe that aliens have visited Earth a number of times. An individual open to the faith in a higher intelligence, in principle can believe in some seemingly conflicting things. Traditional religions are traditional because people transfer their commitment to a particular confession from generation to generation, observing certain rituals as a family. But it is often nothing more than a tribute to the national culture, rather than a sincere belief and commitment to a wholly-owned church dogma.

Let's talk about FOTOCATan interview by Milton W. Hourcade HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET THE IDEA? When I was 17 years old I initiated my ufologic walking, it was1965. Since then, one long ufological life of 47 years has passed (1) during which I have fulfilled several stages, dedicated each one of them to a long duration project, as the study of the landing cases in Spain and Portugal (1974-1978 and 1985-1987), that generated 3 books (2), a stage centered in field investigation and in developing of investigation methodology (1979-1984), that contributed to 2 books as result of my work(3), the compilation and analysis of UFO cases with military witnesses in Spain (1988-1999), including my personal involvement in the beginning and pursuit - like informal adviser-- of the process of declassification of the UFO files of the Spanish Air Force (4), mainly. When I finalized what I consider it was the first part of my work with the files of military sightings (since it is left many material to share and to reveal to the ufological community), I decided that it was time to change of registry and thought about approaching a subject that captivated me from my beginnings in ufology, the photographic images and films of UFOS. It was then the year 2001. HOW MANY PHOTOGRAPHS DID YOU BEGIN WITH? The initial idea was simply to organize and to catalogue several hundreds of photographs of UFO case that I had, in a special file. Although the photos never have been a fundamental reason for my interest, yes it is true that in the first three decades of my ufologic practice I tried to get copies of the original photographs of supposed UFOS, which were apparently extraordinary. Its attractiveness transcended my liking by the subject, it was an artistic, plastic attraction. In the same way as Kandinski, Picasso or others fascinated me, I was seduced by the images of presumed flying saucers. I kept them until they reached the point of a more than acceptable collection, but about which I did not do nothing else than to accumulate them. Once the graphical material took form in a computerized inventory, I thought about the possibility of a long term project that would consist of a revision of world-wide UFO literature in several languages - specialized books and magazines-- to extract all the information on photographic sightings, creating an individual physical file that gathered all the published history about each case. The logistics until the present is that I have reread or consulted 225 books in English, French, Italian, German, Portuguese Spanish, etc., as well as I reviewed 50 collections of specialized magazines of EE.UU., France, Spain, England, Canada, Sweden, Russia, Australia, Italy, Chile and other countries, published since 1948. It is said easily, but it has been a tremendous work. And the knowledge yes occupies place, as a matter of fact I dedicate a complete room to these files. HOW MANY PHOTOS DOES THE CATALOG CURRENTLY HAVE? In addition to 200 folders that group the files of the cases, by country or date, the catalog (FOTOCAT) in itself is a table of Excel that has 28 columns of data; the 7 first contain control data and information for the author, followed by 17 columns of basic data about the observed phenomenon: date, hour, place, duration, geographic codes, name of the photographer, landing, aerial photograph, singular data, references and other information. At the time of printing, each record - there is a record for each event, concretely one for each series of photos, this means that a sighting can produce multiple records-is formatted in three pages in total. Finally, 3 other columns, which are not printed, gather some complementary data that is useful. Complementing the file in paper they are the files of slides and that of digital images, this last one is still in process of chronological arrangement and to be ordered by country. Many thousands of original slides and digital are the graphic support of the catalog. As of to date (2012 July), FOTOCAT has nothing less than 11,050 records or reports. The total number of photos could arrive at 50,000. The organization of the vast volume of visual information is in different phases, according to the country, since we have spent more time in one country than in other, but - along the time we hope to have a perfect systematization of the graphical information. The catalog begins with the first known photo of a UFO (year 1762) and comes to an end --as a general rule-on December 31st. 2005. Why such date? At the end of that year I decided to make a cut as to the admission of new cases to the catalog, when I saw that in the twenty-first century, the vast majority of-many-pictures that were known (mostly via the Internet) were pure garbage: birds some of them frozen in flight using digital photography. I thought that if it has to be comprehensive it was necessary to set a date to cut it. However, there are some exceptions, due to several factors, such as Argentina, that ends on December 31, 2006 and Spain that ends on December 31, 2008. At the moment, there is no deadline for cases of ball lightning or military sightings or landings in Spain. The FOTOCAT matrix creates more than 300,000 data (11,050 cases X 28 columns), a true mine of information that - when the project would be finished, will be sent over the Internet completely and obviously free. It is an example of public service, not only for the sake of its own definition, but also by the hundreds of contributors who sent regularly photo cases to this big to catalog that every day -as if it were a living creature-- is evolving and growing visibly. DO YOU ARRIVE TO SOME CONCLUSION FROM ALL THESE PHOTOS ? I have dedicated over 10 years to this project and the findings verify the assessment of experts that the reliability of graphic documents of UFOs, as a rule, is not more valid than the testimony of eyewitnesses, due to the high margin of error, and specifically about the photos, due to hoaxes. But for the first time, the published works (see references as well as my book list starting in 2003) provide a big amount of fresh information, analytical data and research that no doubt will be of interest to the student of the UFO phenomenology. There is a lot to be done, many critical periods to be analyzed, many countries to consider, many comparisons to be made between regions, years, types of cases, etc.. In spite of all that have been accomplished, it is little compared with what lies ahead. For sure in the coming years we will be able to isolate and draw some general and clever conclusions. So far, this research process also involves the collaboration of technicians and specialists who analyze noticeable cases, classic or potentially valuable, and whose opinions are appearing on the blog FOTOCAT, solving or confirming sightings. IS IT THERE ONE OR A GROUP OF PHOTOS OF ALLEGED "UFOS" WHICH ARE REALLY VALID AS GRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF SOMETHING STRANGE IN THE SKIES? It is evident that the global casuistry mix contains some examples of phenomena of difficult appraisal, which is a spur to further investigation of such kind of reports. The problem is that in some of the better unidentified cases (e.g. Cocoyoc, Mexico, 09/10/1990, or Alfena, Portugal, 11/03/1973), the shape and dynamic feature of the objects filmed are similar to hot air balloons; in other situations, such as the classic events of McMinnville, Ohio, 05/11/1950 or Great Falls, Montana, 08.15.1950, --to name a couple of them in the United States--, those are very controversial and very disputed cases for which reasonable alternative explanations have been given. What it seems clear is that the best photographic evidence is in the oldest events, just when film media (either photography or movie) were of lower quality. At this moment I cannot pronounce myself for "best photos" because the pending task of analysis is still big. HOW THE CATALOG COULD BE ACCESSED? The catalog itself is not publicly available yet, but the author provides regional listings annually to researchers who request them, which is very common. I invite any researcher that needs a list of cases of his country or of certain period, for his work in ufology, to get in contact with me so I can give what is needed: ballesterolmos@yahoo.es Since October 2002 I edit a blog that (not) regularly gives accounts of the progress of the catalog, reports of work done, provides photographic reports, producing statistics from FOTOCAT, makes book reviews and serves to mention and thank the broad international support given to this project. Also during these years, in the blog of the FOTOCAT project has been published brief studies on the casuistry of countries (Finland, Australia) on "repeaters" in photography, IFOs vs. UFOs, distribution of reports by decades, and many other topics related to the UFO phenomenon as a global one in relation to the pictures taken. WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADD ANY OTHER DETAILS OR COMMENTS? FOTOCAT is a project that requires enormous amounts of energy, dedication and work. Therefore my research over the years has gone also in another direction, as could be predicted by someone who knows me well, and I have written several essays on casuistry, research and history. I want to highlight a review of the process of declassification of UFO files worldwide (10) and my recent contribution to a collective work on a book about which Jerome Clark just say this: : "I hesitate not a moment to pronounce this among the most significant UFO books ever written..." (11). The work that lies ahead for FOTOCAT is immense, the search in books and magazines for photographic cases seeking to add to the list, mail with national scholars to exchange information and establish the sample reports for countries, reporting topics (UFOs in Antarctica, 1947, Chile, ball lightning, the Belgian wave, Great Britain, etc..). The collaboration of researchers is much appreciated, and the role they can play in expanding the catalog can be special, so I end this interview by welcoming any collaboration with this project.
