Through Paul Kimballs documentaries "Do You Believe In Majic" (2004) and "Aztec 1948 UFO Crash" (2005) this case crossed my path again and I got to know Scott Ramsey for the first time; in the summer of 2008, shortly after I had been sent a rebuttal article re Aztec, entitled "Folklore 101 vs. UFO Science Fiction, written by Matt Graeber dismissing it as a non-UFO-event, I got a fix on Scott Ramseys email address thanks to Stanton Friedman and I began exchanging emails with him.
Its these personal contacts which made me realize that Scott is a fine, very dedicated and sincere researcher who isnt prone to proclamations or embellishment of facts but tells it like it is.
Despite the fact that most serious researchers consider the Aztec case a done deal and wouldnt most likely touch it with a ten-foot pole, Scott Ramseys new book "The Aztec Incident, Recovery at Hart Canyon" is a definite must-read for every diligent student of historical UFOlogy! And he found it in the 8/1/74 edition of 2001, a Caracas daily.There was at least one significant discrepancy between the Biednys' recollection and the newspaper version. 2001 claimed reports began pouring in around 11:30 on the evening of July 31. Difficult to reconcile that point. However, 2001 also reported "thousands" of eyewitnesses to "four luminous objects," flying not only above Caracas but in multiple locations across the country. Ruppelt's reign as the head of Project Grudge/Blue Book has been referred to by some as "the Golden Age" of the project, because Ruppelt took the whole thing very seriously. You may think it's bizarre that there could be a "Golden Age" of "Blue Book," but we are talking about UFOs here. Anyway, Ruppelt always kept an open mind about the UFO reports his office received, and made sure that his staff remained unbiased as well. And in the end, he believed, like Hynek, that, because roughly 23 percent of the cases his team investigated could not be explained, the UFO phenomenon was worthy of rigorous scientific study.

Dr. Hynek himself said of Ruppelt that "In my contacts with [Ruppelt] I found him to be honest and seriously puzzled about the whole phenomenon." Not wanting to be outdone, Ruppelt had this to say about the good professor: "Dr. Hynek was one of the most impressive scientists I met while working on the UFO project, and I met a good many. He didn't do two things that some of them did: give you the answer before he knew the question; or immediately begin to expound on his accomplishments in the field of science. Unfortunately, I have not been able to determine who said what first, or whether the two men compared notes before praising each other.

Not only that, UFO sightings back then were being routinely reported by military and civilian pilots, radar operators, rocket scientists and weapons experts -- in other words, just about the most credible witnesses you could wish for. Alas, it also just so happened that there were a lot more powerful and influential figures in the Armed Forces who believed that either A) the whole UFO phenomenon is pure bunkum; or B) whether UFOs are real or not, the Air Force must treat them as though they are pure bunkum for security reasons.
Sadly, the nay-sayers won out, the unbiased approach of Captain Ruppelt and his team was no longer desirable within the military, and in time Ruppelt left the project and the Air Force. Project Blue Book took on much of its former grudginess, and "UFO" became a dirty word in the military and in the media, the currency of crackpots and loonies.
Just think about it though: for that one brief instant in time, it was cool for pilots and radar operators to openly file UFO reports, and for the Air Force to admit that it considered UFOs to be worthy of serious investigation. We've never had that since 1953, and may never have it again...
Although it is sometimes contended that astronomers never report UFOs, the Air Force's Project Blue Book files indicate that approximately 1% of all their reports came from amateur and professional astronomers or other users of telescopes (such as missile trackers or surveyors). In the 1970s, astrophysicist Peter A. Sturrock conducted two surveys of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and American Astronomical Society. About 5% of the members polled indicated that they had had UFO sightings. In 1980, a survey of 1800 members of various amateur astronomer associations by Gert Helb and astronomer J. Allen Hynek of the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) found that 24% responded "yes" to the question "Have you ever observed an object which resisted your most exhaustive efforts at identification?"[29]

Examples are the Sturrock Panel study of 1998 and the 1970 AIAA review of the Condon Report. Other private or governmental studies, some secret, have concluded in favor of the ETH, or have had members who disagreed with the official conclusions. The following are examples of such studies and individuals:
* One of the earliest government studies to come to a secret ETH conclusion was Project Sign, the first official Air Force UFO investigation. In 1948, they wrote a top-secret intelligence estimate to that effect. The Air Force Chief of Staff ordered it destroyed. The existence of this suppressed report was revealed by several insiders who had read it, such as astronomer and USAF consultant Dr. J. Allen Hynek and Edward J. * An early U.S. Army study, of which little is known, was called the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit (IPU). In 1987, British UFO researcher Timothy Good received a letter confirming the existence of the IPU from the Army Director of Counter-intelligence, in which it was stated, "...the aforementioned Army unit was disestablished during the late 1950s and never reactivated. All records pertaining to this unit were surrendered to the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations in conjunction with operation BLUEBOOK." The IPU records have never been released. A report from later that month was similarly skeptical but nevertheless concluded "...sightings of UFOs reported at Los Alamos and Oak Ridge, at a time when the background radiation count had risen inexplicably. Here we run out of even 'blue yonder' explanations that might be tenable, and we still are left with numbers of incredible reports from credible observers." A December 1952 memo from the Assistant CIA Director of Scientific Intelligence (O/SI) was much more urgent: "...the reports of incidents convince us that there is something going on that must have immediate attention. Sightings of unexplained objects at great altitudes and traveling at highs speeds in the vicinity of U.S. defense installation are of such nature that they are not attributable to natural phenomena or known types of aerial vehicles." Yes lambasted Condon for extreme bias and ignoring or misrepresenting critical evidence. Saunders wrote, "It is clear... that the sightings have been going on for too long to explain in terms of straightforward terrestrial intelligence. It is in this sense that ETI (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) stands as the `least implausible' explanation of `real UFOs'."[31]
