Shortly after that, Lea says, the recurring nightmare began. She dreamed it on and off for a decade, from when she was 10 until about 20.
Dreams are only part of her story. When she was 12 or 13, she and her sister, who is two years younger, were staying at their grandparents' house in St. Mary's County. They were in separate beds in the same room when a ball of lightning, as Lea describes it, passed through a window and curtain into the room.
About the size of a tennis ball, it glided between the beds, bounced off a door and vanished. A couple of seconds later another lightning ball did the same thing, and then another. Lea says there might have been 20 in all.
For a long time afterward, Lea feared she was losing her mind. But then, five years ago, she and a friend were at a mall outside a bookstore. Lea spotted a display of books, the covers of which featured a drawing of a grotesque creature with big, black, almond-shaped eyes.
The book was Communion: A True Story" the writer Whitley Strieber's account of his abductions by aliens. Lea pointed at the drawing and screamed, "Oh, my God! Oh, my God! That's them! That's them!"
They were the creatures in her nightmare.
"That's when it registered," Lea says. "That's when I said: 'Wait a minute. Something's going on here."
It was the first she had heard of abductions by space creatures. She read the book, and then a couple of others on the subject. She became convinced that the terrifying events...the nightmares, the night of the lights, perhaps other unexplained events as well...had been abductions.
As we are aware...Lea was not alone. Over the past few decades, hundreds of credible abductees have come forward and detailed their ordeals. The phenomena occurs in various forms and intervals, as Lea was about to find out:
Strange things continued to happen to her. While visiting friends in the West Virginia mountains, she was floated out of the house, taken aboard a spaceship and handed a baby.
It was a boy, with leathery skin, a thin neck and an oversized head with patches of red hair. It had huge eyes, she says, but they weren't coal black like those of the adult aliens. They were blue.
"I don't know why, and I know this sounds strange," Lea says in a voice trembling with emotion, "but as soon as I held him in my arms, I knew he was mine. I felt like I was his mother."
She rocked him and talked quietly to him, she says, as several aliens watched. Lea hesitates and says, almost apologetically: "I know this doesn't make any sense."
Even though she had trouble sleeping and often felt as if she was being watched, she says she "kind of gotten used to the idea" of being abducted.
"I don't like it, but there's nothing I can do about it, as far as I can see," she says. "If they were going to hurt me, I think they would have done it a long time ago."
She knows what the skeptics say. But, she says, they don't give people enough credit for knowing the difference between what's actually happened to them and what they might have imagined. Lea says she was never abused as a child. She says she has no reason to make up a story so crazy and bizarre.

"I have no idea," she says. "I don't know who they are, where they come from, what they're doing, nothing."

A detailed review is to come shortly, but I wanted to write about an incident that Friedman brings up in the book.It was 1967 at Boca Chica Naval Air Station in Florida. This base is about as close as you can get to Cuba and still be in the U.S. A former military intelligence operative who was stationed there at the time, confided a rather incredible story to Friedman. The duty of an intelligence officer is normally rather bland at best. They are expected to be fluent in the language of the enemy, in this case both Spanish and Russian. They sit and listen to chatter on the enemy's military broadcast channels. This is usually about as exciting as watching candle wax dry. Should anything of note occur, the incident is to be written up and an exact transcript of the event is turned over to the higher ups, usually the fine folks at the NSA (National Security Agency).
On a day in 1967, things were anything but boring to one man who was monitoring Cuban radio transmissions.The Cuban Air Defense force detected an unknown aircraft heading for Cuban airspace at a speed of about MACH 1. A pair of MiG-21 fighters were scrambled to intercept. As the planes neared their target, the pilots reported that the craft was a single, solid, silver-colored metal sphere with no markings or appendages. The intelligence officer immediately sat up, realizing that what they were talking about was a UFO. As the UFO crossed over the Cuban mainland, the pilots were given the order to shoot it down. The government's reaction to the FOIA request would seem to indicate that there is indeed something to all of this. Yet the problem is one that is ever so common in UFO research: the evidence is all hearsay at this point. What we really have amounts to a narrative that begins "some guy told me that..." Hardly the sort of thing that could stand up in court, let alone to the scientific method. It makes sense, however, that these sorts of obstacles exist due to the growing amount of evidence of a cover-up. Would you place yourself on the line after signing security papers that warn of "the penalty of death?" Plus, the government's official response is not necessarily one that indicates an alien presence. The UFO could have been a secret military program being tested in hostile airspace. I don't find that hypothesis to be very likely as the described actions of the object outperform anything in our current inventory, to say nothing of what was available to us in 1967. Seems to me that if we indeed had a weapon that worked that well, we would have seen a lot of it since then. Would've come in nice and handy over Vietnam, a conflict that was raging at the time.If this was a real occurrence and if the object was not of our possession (I know, there's all those pesky "ifs" again), then it is a critical case of a UFO engaging an Earth military power...and winning rather decidedly. That may not bode well for the human race.
WE'VE HEARD RUMBLINGS BEFORE about the Catholic Church and its interest in extraterrestrial life, of course, but last week's international news stories about the Vatican's chief astronomer seem to have hit some people hard. I guess so -- for the faithful to learn that the Church astronomer believes the concept of intelligent life and (gasp!) aliens on other planets is within the realm of possibility, and that God's universe might therefore be populated with far more intelligent beings than just our sorry lot, must be a spine-tingling realization.
I'm no more an expert on religion than any other area, but it seems to me that in this instance the Vatican is merely playing CYA (cover your a**). Even while instilling traditional religious values and teachings amongst their flock, surely Church officials haven't failed to notice the UFO controversy (don't everybody scream out, "The Miracle at Fatima" at the same time, we've heard that one before, and if anybody lays Ezekiel's Wheels on me one more time, I may burst into flames) and its chilling aspects. But if anybody expects a palingenesis here, they may be disappointed.
Uncommon common sense should tell us that the Vatican, like any other governing body on this planet, knows the score about the UFO issue and likewise realizes it must deal with the growing body of scientific evidence indicating abundant life throughout the known universe. What better course of action, then, to slowly make cautious statements...just in case the evidence comes to a head. For all that's holy (!), be assured that this Church is not about to be caught with its icons down when the ultimate proof of UFO intelligence and/or higher extraterrestrial life becomes known. Like the rest of us, religious institutions would prefer to say, see, we knew it all the time, it's all right here in our teachings. They couldn't very well say, "Sorry folks, we never saw THIS one coming..."
As always, I recommend that we keep an eye open whenever a religious institution, built upon centuries of dogma and steadfastly inculcated with the refusal to change with the times, seems a bit too open-minded. Church hierarchy may indeed focus momentarily upon the idea that other planetary civilizations exist, but concurrently I've little doubt that its sacred places still harbor those who long for the good old days of The Inquisition, and who hunger voraciously for the opportunity to have another rough go at that impertinent historical figure, Copernicus. This was the first time that a high ranking and respected military personage had come forward with information in connection to Roswell and crashed disks. Not only that, but Col. Corso states that he witnessed the shipment of dead aliens and was later to personally handle alien artifacts. This book caused a commotion throughout the UFO community, many viewing it as a major revelation and the beginning of a disclosure process they had long awaited.
The late Col. Philip J. Corso's military history is certainly impressive. During his twenty-one-year military career, he was honored with nineteen medals, decorations and ribbons for meritorious service. He was a key Army intelligence officer who served on General MacArthur's staff in Korea.
From 1953 to 1956, Corso was given intelligence staff assignments on both the Psychological Strategy Board (PSB) and the Operations Coordinating Board (OCB). The OCB was established as an independent agency by Executive Order 10483, September 2, 1953, to report to the NSC (National Security Council) on the development, by appropriate Executive branch agencies, of operational plans for national security policies of international import. In 1961, Corso was assigned to Research and Development (R&D) at the Pentagon, working under Lt. General Arthur Trudeau, head of Army R&D.
Col. Corso retired from the army in 1963, and went on to serve Senator James Eastland and Strom Thurmond as a staff member specializing in national security.
In 1947, Corso was posted to Fort Riley, Kansas. On the afternoon of July 6th 1947, several army vehicles pulled in to Fort Riley with a shipment of cargo on route to Wright Field, Ohio. (Wright Field became Wright-Patterson AFB in 1948). The crates were offloaded and stored in one of the old veterinary buildings on the base. That evening Corso was assigned to post duty and whilst doing his security checks he made his way over to the veterinary buildings to check on Bill Brown, who was on post duty that night.
According to Corso, when he got there he noticed Brown wasn't stationed at his post, as he stood wondering where Brown could be he heard a voice hiss out of the darkness "Major Corso".
It was Brown, he sounded excited and told Corso that he should take a look at the crates stored in the building. Corso, after much debate with Brown agrees to take a look. One of the crates had already been opened so the lid didn't prove too troublesome to remove. As he peered into the crate the shock of what he discovered sent him into a swoon. Instead of weapons, as expected, he could make out a small-framed body suspended in an unusual thick blue liquid.
"At first I thought it was a dead child they were shipping somewhere," writes Corso, "But this was no child. It was a four-foot human-shaped figure with arms, bizarre-looking six-fingerer hands -- I didn't see a thumb - thin legs and feet, and an oversized incandescent light bulb-shaped head that looked like it was floating over a balloon gondola for a chin." Corso adds that the image of the dead alien never left his memory.
In 1961, Corso was assigned to Research and Development (R&D) at the Pentagon, working under Lt. General Arthur Trudeau. Corso was in the Trudeau's office when Trudeau pointed to a filing cabinet and said, "This has some special files, war materiel you've never seen before, that I want to put under your Foreign Technology responsibilities." The General informed Corso that the filing cabinet would be transferred to Corso's office and that Corso was to decide how to deal with the contents advising Corso that he should do a little research on the Roswell files first.
According to Corso, the cabinet contained retrieved alien artifacts from the Roswell crash and he had been placed in charge of devising a way to exploit the obvious strategic value of the wreckage. The wreckage had evidently been locked away in the Army's possession from 1947 to 1961, with very few knowing about it. Corso discussed his involvement in a project that had been set up to learn the secrets of the Roswell saucer and put them to use in national defense, and allegedly showed Dennis and the others sketches of aliens.
On Pflock's arrival the party left the museum and made their way to the alleged UFO crash sites, and debris field. On route Corso told Pflock about his interest in Roswell and said that he had played a small role in the aftermath of the affair, and that he would be including it as a minor piece in his memoirs. Pflock states that it struck him that Corso really knew very little about the Roswell incident and appeared to be trying to gather information from others in the group. Corso goes on to make some outlandish claims about an encounter he'd had with a CIA operative and how he had to read him the riot act, and had to even get a little physically aggressive with him.
Unbeknown to Corso, Pflock knew the CIA station chief who Corso was referring to, from his time in the agency. Pflock knew the story was highly unlikely and wrote Corso off as another blowhard.
In 1997, Pflock was asked to review a new book publication, it happened to be "The Day After Roswell" by Col. Philip Corso. Pflock was astonished to find that instead of the expected memoirs a significant amount of information in the book pertained to Corso's personal involvement with a dead ET and retrieved alien artifacts. Much to Pflock's surprise, Senator Strom Thurmond had written a brief foreword for Corso's book. Pflock called the senator's press secretary and discovered that Corso had asked the senator to write a foreword to his memoirs "I Walked with Giants: My Career in Military Intelligence." According to the senator's press secretary no mention of a book on Roswell and USG cover-ups had been mentioned.
On June 5th, 1997, in a press release on the matter, Senator Thurmond states:
I did not, and would not, pen the foreword to a book about, or containing, a suggestion that the success of the United States in the Cold War is attributable to the technology found on a crashed UFO. I do not believe in UFOs, do not believe that the United States is in possession of such a vehicle, and do not believe that there has been any government cover-up of a UFO crash. The outline of I Walk [ed] with Giants provided to me by Mr. Corso indicated he was writing a book of his recollections and observations on topics such as World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnamese Conflict, intelligence, espionage, and counter-espionage operations. There was absolutely no mention, suggestion, or indication that any of the chapters and subjects listed dealt with Unidentified Flying Objects and government conspiracies to cover-up the existence of such a space vehicle.
Senator Thurmond's foreword was promptly removed from subsequent printings of the book.
I have checked Corso's DA record, and it does show that Corso was in the places he says he was. However, without substantive evidence to back his claims up, and there is very little at this time, the fact that he was in the right locations and at the right times does not validate his claims.
In June, 1998, one month before his death, Corso filed an affidavit in the U. S. District Court for the District of Arizona - via Citizens Against UFO Secrecy v. Department of the Army (Civil Action No. 98-0538 PHX ROS).
