The British Government has finally released it's UFO files via the Ministry of Defense. This 6,00 pages document includes sightings, renderings, drawings, videos, etc. about UFO's from eyewitnesses that believe we are not alone. The UFO files release will include over 10 years worth of data with more being released at a later point in time from the Freedom of Information Act. Some of the files include people saying they had specifically seen aliens or their UFO's up close. Now most of these "sightings" were probably mistaken, people have to wonder after seeing the documents of some of the testimonials.
"Are We Alone"This is a question that has been around for decades, but no one has been able to come up with a clear answer. While over half of the country believe that we are not alone, there is no hard concrete evidence that will justify an answer for this question. While you ask people, most will say yes, but not definitively. This many be because of religious affiliation etc., but with the British Government releasing these documents that had been kept secret for so long, this may now shed some light back onto the topic.
With the photographs and videos, there has to be something else out there. The people will not know this until the Government completely releases these documents and more Governments begin to follow suit. The US Government especially should because they have always been accused of providing false information to people and have been involved in many conspiracy theories abroad. It will be interesting to see if people begin to come forward a bit after the documents are released to help shed some light on what they saw and heard so that it can continue to fascinate us beyond our wildest imaginations and dreams.

Incidents with UFOs are classified in three levels. A close encounter of the first kind involves the sighting of an unexplained aerial object within 500 feet. These are by far the most common. Take for instance the persistent UFO that a prominent Westmoreland County man encountered at about 11:55 p.m. August 30, 1983, on Route 217 between Derry and Kingston Dam (on Route 30). "There were some lights and he looked up and saw an object above his vehicle," Gordon said. "He heard sounds like 'whoop whoop whoop' and the noise was so intense that it vibrated his body from head to toe. He was frightened."

If anyone else saw this object, they didn't report it. But several persons individually observed and subsequently reported a UFO sighting on February 10, 1988, near Blough, a village near the borders of Somerset and Cambria Counties. The sightings occurred between 7:45 and 8:30 p.m. over a creek near Hooversville. Three cars stopped and the occupants watched a lighted craft send down about a half dozen laser type lights onto the treetops in the woods. It hovered noiselessly, as if there were no propellors nor engine. They said it was about 50 to 60 feet long by 25 feet wide, and it looked like a shiny metallic football. There were two rows of steady lights. In the distance, there appeared to be another circular shaped object in the sky.
Then at 8 p.m. a motorist going over the nearby McNally Bridge saw something rise from below. Another person near Davidsville saw a small silent "ship in the sky," about 20 feet in diameter with blinking lights. He drove to a rise in the road to get a better view, but it disappeared.
A woman driving her car on Route 220 near Altoona had not only a sighting but also what she claimed was an indirect encounter with a UFO. It was about 8 p.m. October 15, 1983, and as she approached the Bellwood turnoff she became aware of a loud whirring sound. Through the right window she observed a bright, silvery, saucer-shaped object about 24 feet in diameter and 30 feet off the ground.

At about 2:30 p.m. September 2, 1989, a man near Ebensburg saw an unidentified craft hovering noiselessly over his pond 50 feet from where he stood. It was about 30 feet off the ground, 15 to 20 feet long and 8 to 10 feet high. "He said it was more spherical in shape, with a silvery upper part and underneath it was orange red," Gordon said. "In the center were glass-like structures, like amber windows, and there were yellow-green ligts and protrusions from the sphere."
The witness saw a mist coming down from the craft. It suddenly moved "like a hummingbird" and was gone. The whole sighting lasted about 45 seconds. He then found that a grassy area about four feet tall had been swirled down in a 12-foot circular pattern, counterclockwise.
In 1990, similar types of circles made news around the world and in the states but there was no media coverage of a series of circles in rural areas of southwestern Pennsylvania. In a Washington County field, a farmer found three rings arranged within each other like a target. The circles measured 54 and 40 feet, with a smaller circle in the middle. The other incident happened in August near Chicora, Butler County. Those three circles, measuring 32 to 33 feet in daimeter, were interconnected in an oat field. In both cases, the crops were swirled without the stems breaking, unlike being trampled, and there were no tracks into the area.
Gordon believes that the farmers' insistence on anonymity supports their sincerity. They had nothing to gain by making bogus reports. Some people claim to consciously remember certain details of being taken aboard UFOs. Others recall details under hypnosis. Every now and then I run across someone who believes in aliens, and I honestly admit that sometimes I wonder about them as well. With a recent rise in "evidence" and eye witness testimony from films like the "The Disclosure", you can't help but wonder that maybe there really is something to all the hype. Sure, people can always debate about the authenticity of the evidence. They can always argue about whether or not someone lied. You cannot argue away someones faith, however. Whether that faith is in God or little green men, we all believe what we want to believe. When speaking about extra terrestrials, however, I find that there are two different areas that are commonly skipped over in reference to God and Christianity.
First, I've noticed that those who believe in aliens also tend to believe that it automatically discounts any religion and ancient story. To a degree I have to say that it is a tempting theory, if it is all true then it could certainly answer many different questions. It could also explain away miracles, stories of ancient wonders, and the early advancement of civilization. There are many areas it does not explain though. For one, it cannot provide ANY answers to the arguments for Gods existence. It fails to explain how the universe came from nothing. It fails to explain why we have objective morality. It fails to explain why all the cosmological constants are so finely tuned for life. It fails to explain why abstract concepts like truth and justice exist. In short, even if aliens do exist, we still need a presence of a God to explain why things are the way they are. Secondly, I find that many will say something along the lines of "Jesus was an alien. All his miracles were really just technology that humans didn't recognize." In order to take this objection head on, first realize that if someone uses this argument, they are acknowledging the fact that Jesus was real, which is a huge milestone in your favor! Also realize that this objection is based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever, just speculation. After taking a close look at the self-understanding of Jesus in the Scriptures, we find that He really thought he was God. All textual scholars agree that He arrived on the scene with an unprecedented sense of authority. He claimed to be able to do things like forgive sins and correct the Jewish law. He said outright that He was God several times. Do they honestly think that an alien got on a ship, traveled for several thousand years, landed on earth all so that he could start a religion and be killed for it? As C. S. Lewis said, "either He was a lunatic, a liar, or He really was Lord." In our specific case he would be an alien lunatic. If someone ever brings up an objection along these lines, ask them these questions: why do you think that and what evidence do you have to support your view? Often you'll find that the only "evidence" they have is hearing about people who think they saw alien spacecraft or claim to have been abducted, and that isn't evidence at all. You might get the response that the government is hiding all the evidence, which is possible but not plausible. Think about it, if the government were really keeping the entire world in the dark and suppressing evidence, then they are doing a far better job at that then they have ever done at anything else in our history. It is a curious enigma that if Christianity was defended using such "evidence" it would truly be the laughing stock of the world, yet if it is used to defend the existence of aliens it suddenly becomes an intriguing conspiracy theory.
There are also some other holes in the theory of extra terrestrials. For one, the distance between our home worlds would be enormous. The closest star to our sun is Alpha Centauri, which is 4.3 light years away. Now that might not sound too far, but it's really 25 trillion miles. Even if the alien ship could travel at 1 million miles an hour (which is almost impossible), it would take at least 2,500 years to reach us. This means that if an alien ship left their planet around the time of Jesus, they would still not be here for another 500 years, which is absurd. Another hole in the theory is that we have never received any signals or transmissions from outer space. Programs like SETI have been running for over 50 years and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Don't you find that at least a little bit odd? Also curious to note is the fact that although video and picture capable media has become more commonplace, the number of reported sightings, pictures and videos of space ships/aliens has actually decreased. This reveals the well-known fact that America has a current fixation on the subject of aliens, while the rest of the world is much more skeptical of the idea. Then again, I obviously don't know everything. I could very well be wrong or perhaps am missing some information. Maybe "aliens" do exist and have been visiting earth all along, which brings me to my last point. What I'm going to say may sound somewhat strange, but when talking about this subject, what isn't? The point I want to make is this: perhaps aliens are not really aliens at all, maybe they are the demons of the Bible. Surprisingly, this theory of aliens beings demons is very consistent with what we are taught about demons. We know that they are extremely intelligent minds. We know that they have the power to deceive the masses very easily. Most importantly, we know that they do not possess physical bodies like we do. As such, they would not be subject to the laws of physics like we are, which could explain a lot. I think this is an important clue. If you ever hear testimony from those who truly believe they came into contact with aliens, you will find that their stories are surprisingly consistent. For one, the ships that people claim to see seem to be able to move in ways that defy physics. We're told that they can move vast distances almost instantly. Often moving from a position of motion to a complete stop with no lag or inertia. We are told that abductions feel like an out of body experience, where personal contact with aliens is a very mental trauma often associated with intense fear. Abduction in particular sounds a lot like possession to me, although I have done very limited research on it. Would it really be so hard to imagine that demons are orchestrating this lie? Perhaps this is the "Great Deception" spoken of in Revelation. Perhaps this is what causes the church to fall away from Christ in the end times. How do you think the world would react if aliens suddenly appeared in our society, claiming to be the source of all mistaken religion? I can only imagine the chaos that would transpire should we be tricked into thinking that Christianity is based on mistaken alien visitation, not a personal God. Of course this is all just my speculation. Just Google "aliens are demons" and you will find plenty of conspiracy theories, most of which are laughable, but are thought provoking none-the-less.
Anyway, that pretty much sums up my thoughts on aliens. A lot of it is nothing more than the result of day dreaming and boredom at work. It is always interesting to wonder, though.

I reported last week that there were going to be two shows called UFO Hunters. By luck or design, the one on the History Channel premiered first -- but only by a week. This show, from the producers of Ghost Hunters, can probably lay claim to being the "real" UFO Hunters -- the one people hearing the title are expecting to see. SFUFOH (do differentiate it from HCUFOH) follows the same format as the highly successful Ghost Hunters shows. The team is composed of NY-SPI (New York Strange Phenomena Investigators). And like GH, they all have other jobs and they dont take any money for their investigations. Their jobs tend to be useful to their investigations, like astronomer, and private investigator. Like GH, the team gets tips for cases, gathers, and then heads out to collect evidence and personal accounts. Like GH, they cover two cases per show. In this show, they look into a UFO that may have crashed offshore in the Atlantic ocean, and a series of strange lights over the NY/NJ area. The SF team does a pretty good job of investigating the first report. The collate reports of a fireball and Navy investigations resulting in lights on the ocean. (They even dive the ocean looking for a possible meteor.) This leaves only a red flashing beacon unexplained (though it seems likely to me that it was a passing ship). Unfortunately, because of this one element, and some minor eyewitness contradictions, they mark the case as "unresolved," though it seemed clear to me that theyd nailed it as a fireball using scientific methods. The second investigation quickly veers from lights in the sky to an "alien abduction" scenario. And at this point, the show veers off the scientific rails. Though the team professes not to know what UFOs are or where they come from, they seem to have completely bought into the alien abduction idea--and even have a member whos a hypnotist who often works with these types of cases. I admire their determination to treat their "witness" respectfully, but I thought his description of what happened to him seemed more like a classic seizure with seizure-induced delusions than a real event. The investigation on this case seems much less trying to find explanations, and much more about interviewing witnesses. But as NYC astronomer Neil DeGrass Tyson points out, eyewitness reports are the lowest form of evidence in science. As a result, this case is not even close to solved. Lets hope in the future, the show applies more of the methods it used in the first case and less from the second.

This is a process through which the believer will actually use the evidence to make their belief stronger! As you can see the article gives some examples in the world of politics and media as well as science. The moral of the story is that it's impossible to argue with a believer no matter how strong your evidence is that proves them wrong; you will only reinforce their opinions. With that amazing synchronicity that Skeppers themselves deny and call "delusion" but I'm convinced is real (And as you've seen, you'll never persuade me otherwise!), soon after reading the article Reflex posted I attended an Oxford Skeptics in the Pub event; see: http://oxford.skepticsinthepub.org/. The speaker was the philosopher Stephen Law doing a speech about his new book with the very eye-catching title "Believing Bullshit", see: http://stephenlaw.blogspot.com/ (Incidentally I think it's a crime against the English Language that Skeppies like Law, and Penn and Teller etc, have stripped the wonderful expletive "bullshit" of all its vulgar power!) He gave a speech, that was also an outline of his book, which complimented what I had just read in Reflex' link perfectly. He claimed that some people get trapped in what he called an "IBH-Intellectual Black Hole". IBH's are very like black holes in outer space because they have interiors behind their event horizons which are entirely isolated from the rest of the intellectual universe. Behind that "Intellectual Schwartzschild Radius" a person can think in a way that seems very sensible to themselves and to others inside the IBS, but to those observing from outside the IBH they appear very obviously to be thinking nonsense. But, as with Reflex' article, a person inside the IBH cannot be easily persuaded into changing their way of thinking into a form that allows them to escape from their IBH, in fact in most cases it's impossible. He gave a list of how IBH's are formed and the pitfalls to look out for to avoid falling into one. It was a member of the Oxford SiTP audience gave me the greatest insight into what I was observing and help me put the pieces of the jigsaw together. He asked Law: "I'm worried that I might be trapped in an IBH." he said and gave details. "Don't worry" responded Law confidently. "If you're able so much as to formulate that question in your mind then the answer is invariably 'No!'." So presumably Stephen Law himself, along with the author of Reflex' article, don't think that they are in an IBH. But I wonder if they are. The clue lies in the title of both the article and Law's book: "Why do People Believe Stupid Stuff even when they're Confronted with the Truth?" This sounds very similar to Michael Shermer's crypto-masturbatory rant: "Why do People Believe Weird Things?" Law's book is called "Believing Bullshit". This means that there is an unspoken premise, a foundational assumption to the entire piece. This is why, as I explained to Reflex on the forum thread, they have internal contradictions in intellectual depth. What I mean by that is that their content involves some sophisticated philosophy, of the type I wrote about here: http://hpanwo.blogspot.com/2010/11/meaning-of-life.html. But when Law gave some examples of what he thought were IBH's he replied in the tone of a Skepticistic bar-room blusterer: "Well obviously these include belief in ghost, fairies, UFO's, unicorns. Religions and Conspiracy Theories like 9/11, aliens building the pyramids and faces on Mars!" So the unspoken basis of his viewpoint is: "Well, the Skeptics are always right of course!" In the same way the article assumes, from the very title, that what constitutes "Stupid Stuff" and what constitutes "Truth" has already been settled and is not open to further negotiation. The way Law uses the word "bullshit", even in the very title of his book, (I wonder if he had a battle with the publishers over that!) shows the same self-decided premise. Socrates said: "He who seeks the truth must question everything." Many modern heroes of the Skeptic Movement say: "He who seeks the truth must question everything... except things that other Skeptics say are true." So does this mean that Stephen Law has fallen head-over-heels into one of his own Intellectual Black Holes? Maybe. I'll have to read his book to be sure; I'll review it on HPANWO probably. I've often wondered about the cause of the emergence of the Skeptic Movemnent that has taken place over the last few years. Skeptics in The Pub only began in 1999. There are Skeptic conferences galore, Skeptic celebrities making a blooming career etc. This has all emerged within the last decade or so. To adapt the opening lines of the article: "The misconception:" The Skeptic Community would, having its beliefs challenged with facts, alter its opinions and incorporate the new information into its thinking."The Truth:" It's deepest convictions have been challenged by contradictory evidence so its beliefs get stronger. The "backfire effect" begins! The Skeptics become more and more certain that there are no Conspiracy Theories and that the Paranormal does not exist! They close ranks to concentrate their firepower, form organizations and support groups, they write books and the rest is history.James Randi is actually the perfect product of the Skeptic "backfire effect" which is why he's today enjoying unprecedented fame and success. For people who don't know any better, you'd think Randi was the first and only Paranormal investigator on Earth! Oh, he very occasionally refers to other investigators, but he always portrays them as kind of wide-eyed flower-children, gliding around haunted houses like Tolkienian elves. It's Randi and Randi alone, who has ever done any real Paranormal research I can hardly express to you what a load of bullshit that is! But it fits in perfectly with the "backfire effect". Randi creates such a convincing delusion that it allows his disciples to live in a completely false world: "Come in." he invites you. "Come into my parlour and you need never be troubled by these worrisome thoughts again."Could it be that the rise... nay "Renaissance" of the Skeptic Movement in virtually just the last decade could be "the backfire effect" against the successes and increasing profile people like me on the Woo-Woo side have had? I know now that you'll want me to answer a question that you've all got on your lips right now: "Ben, have you ever wondered if "you" are trapped in one of Stephen Law's Intellectual Black Holes?"
